The Modern Menu

Happy Memorial Day, friends! If you know me, then you know I love America. Bless our troops!

I wanted to tell y’all about a cookbook I was recently send to review. The Modern MenuIr is a kosher cookbook from personal chef and cooking instructor Kim Kushner all about modern, fresh, kosher food.

This isn’t your standard kosher cookbook! Instead of having chapters for seasons or meal types. Kim organizes her simple, seasonal recipes under categories such as “crisp”, “fresh”, “warm” or “saucy”. Saucy is right! This echoes Kim’s sentiment that “less is more, simple is always best, and food should look as good as it tastes and taste as good as it looks.” Speaking of looks, the book is chock full of photos (there is one of colorful beets that I seriously want to hang in my kitchen.)

Some of the standout recipes? Lemongrass Halibut with Cilantro and Peanuts, Eggplant with Spicy Harissa Dipping Sauce and Cinnamon-Hazelnut Pavlova with Raspberries for starters. Oh yeah. Kim offers helpful tips alongside each recipe such as what you can prep ahead of time and explains more obscure ingredients. It’s a winner!

One of my current “go to” cookbooks is Deb Perelman’s “The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook.” In addition to wonderful recipes, the cookbook makes for great reading! Deb also has a weekly blog, chock full of stories and recipes.

Love Deb’s blog! I’ll have to check out her cookbook one of these days too.
